A Joyful Garden Wedding in the Northamptonshire Countryside

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll probably know just how much I adore photographing garden weddings. There’s something incredibly special about celebrating in a place filled with personal history, meaningful memories, and the people you love most. A garden wedding beautifully combines the comfort of a familiar setting with the romance of the countryside, creating a day that feels deeply personal and completely unique. As a garden wedding photographer I am incredibly lucky to capture love stories like this - weddings that feel relaxed, intentional, and deeply personal. Lydia & Niall came together with their closest family and friends in their garden and it honestly felt like something out of a Richard Curtis film. All beautifully planned by Joanna Wilford Weddings.

A Garden Wedding Ceremony Framed by the Groom's Labour of Love

What made Lydia & Niall’s garden wedding ceremony so special was the quiet hours of work behind it - a garden shaped and grown by Niall for this very day. Set within the grounds of a listed home in Northamptonshire, the garden was full of deep, vibrant colour, with flowers growing freely around the entire space. It felt natural and a bit wild - not overly styled, just really personal. Their celebrant-led ceremony took place in the early afternoon, with a marquee set up to give some shade from the sun. With a smaller group of guests, it felt relaxed and intimate, and everyone there felt like they were meant to be part of it. As a Northamptonshire wedding photographer, these kinds of garden wedding ceremonies are always a favourite to photograph - there’s something about being outside, surrounded by everything the couple has created themselves. There were kids moving around, people properly present in the moment, and not long after the ceremony, their dog came over to join them too - which just felt like it summed the day up perfectly.

A Relaxed Garden Wedding Cocktail Hour in Northamptonshire

After the ceremony, everyone moved naturally into the cocktail hour, spreading out across the garden with a drink in hand. It kept that same relaxed pace as the ceremony, with no real shift in energy - just more time for people to talk, wander, and take it all in. The drinks themselves were a reflection of everything Niall had already put into the space. He’d made a selection of shrubs using ingredients grown in the garden - lemon & lime, blueberry & lavender, pear & ginger, plum & honey. It was a simple idea, but it tied everything together without needing to make a big thing of it. Guests noticed it straight away. Conversations started around the drinks, people swapping and trying different ones, but it never felt like a focal point - just another thoughtful part of this relaxed garden wedding in Northamptonshire. With the garden in full colour around them, kids running about, and people gathered in small groups, it all felt easy and unforced. The kind of atmosphere that doesn’t need much direction - it just happens on its own.

Wedding Speeches in the Bride & Groom's Back Garden

Lydia’s mum and dad both made speeches, alongside Lydia and Niall themselves. Each one felt personal and unforced, with the kind of honesty that suits a wedding in your own back garden. Everything took place against the backdrop of the house and garden, which made it feel even more connected to the day. During the wedding breakfast, a quartet played quietly in the background, adding to that relaxed countryside garden wedding atmosphere without ever taking over the moment.

Wedding Couples Portraits in the Northampton Countryside

We used two main locations for the couples portraits. Firstly their garden obviously (duh!). We then took a stroll through the village in the late evening so we could look to play and extend the sense of time and place that had become soo important to this documenting this wedding day. As we walked through the village Lydia & Niall were congratulated by numerous neighbours, and often waited whilst they had conversations as they updated the locals with the exciting news.
